Herman Kafura, Green Bay… age 83, passed away on January 12, 2025. He was born of German immigrant parents who came to the United States in the early 1920s. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and then continued his education with a M.A. graduate program in Russian Studies. During his undergraduate days he was enrolled in the Army ROTC program and was cited at graduation as a distinguished military graduate and received his commission as an Armor Officer. He was called to active duty in 1967 serving in Vietnam in the 1st Cavalry Division. His military career continued in Germany, Norfolk, VA, Quetta, Pakistan and various countries in the Middle East, finishing his career in Washington D. C. While in Pakistan he met his absolutely wonderful wife of 42 years, Christina.
For the last 50 years he thoroughly enjoyed working on his two pine plantations in Shawano County. He worked hard to advocate for sustainable forestry, as well as support a variety of environmental causes close to his heart.
