Emerald Ash Borer Detected in Washburn and Taylor Counties

In partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has detected emerald ash borer (EAB) for the first time in Washburn and Taylor counties.

In Washburn County, DNR Forest Health staff detected this ash tree-killing beetle at a private residence in the Town of Springbrook on April 3. EAB was confirmed by USDA-APHIS on April 29. Multiple trees around the property displayed characteristic symptoms of EAB presence, including woodpecker flecking and serpentine feeding-galleries. In Taylor County, DNR Forest Health staff detected EAB at a private residence in the City of Medford on April 10. EAB was confirmed by USDA-APHIS on April 29. One ash tree on the property displayed characteristic symptoms of EAB presence, including woodpecker flecking, serpentine feeding-galleries, and D-shaped exit holes.

Washburn and Taylor counties are the first and second new county detections of 2024, respectively, and mark the 70th and 71st county detections since EAB was first confirmed in the state in 2008. At this time, Burnett County is the only Wisconsin county that has not had an EAB detection.

There are no state or federal regulatory changes as a result of this detection. EAB was federally deregulated as of January 14, 2021 and Wisconsin rescinded its state quarantine effective July 1, 2023.

For more information about EAB and where it has been found, or to report a new finding, visit https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/EAB.aspx.

Note: DATCP will send notifications only when EAB is found for the first time in a county.
